Our approach is to grow for goodness and pick it fresh - you can taste the difference!

Why Choose Ōtautahi Vege Bags?

  • Fresher, Healthier, More Sustainable:
Seasonal, local veges taste better, are more nutritious, and have a lighter footprint — no long shipping or excess packaging.
  • Support Local Growers & Kai Security:
Your subscription supports Te Waerenga Trust and helps build a strong, connected local food system in Ōtautahi.
  • Reduce Waste & Know Your Food’s Story:
Subscribing helps us grow just what’s needed and connects you with the people and places behind your kai.

How does it work?

  1. Subscribe to a seasonal vege bag using our web form.
  2. Choose your weekly price based on what you can afford.
  3. Choose your pick up location.
  4. Taste the difference! Our veges are grown to be better for flavour, better for the soil, and better for you.

Why local?

Because local kai means fresher taste, fewer food miles, and a deeper connection to where your food comes from. It keeps nutrients intact, cuts down on packaging and emissions, and supports growers who care for the land. When food is grown nearby, it doesn’t just taste better — it helps build a stronger, more resilient food system.

We believe the future of food is local, organic, and abundant — better for flavour, better for the soil, and better for you.

At Ōtautahi Vege Bags, we grow our produce in three māra kai around Jacksons Creek in the catchment of the Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River.

These market gardens and the vege bag programme are part of the wider kaupapa of Te Waerenga, a not-for-profit that nurtures community connection, hope, and care for the whenua through local food systems

Love these vege bags - organic, locally grown and seasonal. Everything is super fresh and you get to try some really interesting types of vegetables that you wouldn't find in the supermarket. Especially enjoy the amazing tomatoes and beans in season! Great value for organically grown produce.

I get a weekly veggie bag from the farm and there's such a great variety in them! I love knowing its been grown just around the corner, and that the team work hard in such a cool urban farm! It's great to support local, the bags are really value for money and I've got to try crops I'd not find in the supermarket too.

All the produce from their weekly vege bags is delicious and fresh, having a farm in the community is incredible and they're doing important mahi for other urban farming initiatives

Seasonal vege bags

Get a colourful, seasonal mix of 7–8 fresh, organically grown vegetables each week — from crunchy carrots to tender leafy greens, aromatic herbs, and hearty cauliflower. Our vege bags are packed with care and grown regeneratively, making it easy to eat well & support local growers.

Subscription: Pay what you can & Pay it forward

We use a pay-what-you-can system with a pay-it-forward option, so everyone can access fresh, local kai — no matter their financial situation. When members subscribe to a season of weekly vege bags, they choose a price that suits their means. Those who can pay a bit more help subsidise the cost for others, creating a simple, powerful way to support both community and local growers.

Suggested value & break-even price

Our suggested value of $34 per bag reflects the true cost of growing food in a way that honours both people and the planet — including paying at least a living wage to our paid growing staff and using locally sourced, ethical inputs. While it’s often cheaper to import food grown with synthetic fertilisers, we believe in building a system that supports local farmers and soil health. Members are welcome to pay more or less depending on their means — every contribution helps move us closer to a fair, resilient, and relocalised food system.
