Te Waerenga Whakatō Puāwai - Charitable Trust
Te Waerenga (formerly Addington Farm) is a community-focused māra kai (food garden) based in Ōtautahi. Started in 2017 by a group of friends who wanted to support their neighbourhood, we’ve been helping people grow kai and community ever since.
At Te Waerenga we create welcoming spaces where people of all backgrounds can connect, learn, and get their hands in the soil.
Te Waerenga began in one shared backyard; it now covers several backyards and the current development phase (late 2025) is a big move into our local Addington Park. This exciting expansion will give us more space to make a positive impact. The new garden will increase public visibility, deepen community connections, and support our vision for a more food-secure, vibrant, and inclusive neighbourhood.
We navigate change and growth with the guidance of a dedicated and passionate Board of Trustees. On the ground, our small but talented staff team gets the māhi done with the support of an incredible team of volunteers.
Our Vision:
To see the people and place of Addington flourishing & growing in tūmanako.
Our Values:
- In it together: We recognize that our community grows together as we re-distribute resources and learn from each other.
- Manaakitanga: We keep the teapot boiling and seek to grow the mana of one another.
- Naming the good: We take time to try to notice the inherent goodness and interconnectedness of all people, situations and places.
- Kaitiakitanga: We seek to care for the mana of the whenua in a way that ensures the next generation can find more worms
